Paper Snowflake Pattern

This paper snowflake pattern shows you how to make awesome 3D snowflake decorations. They look complicated, but actually they're simple to make, and wonderful to brighten up a room in winter.
(Suitable for age 8 and up.)

What you'll need:

6 pieces of origami paper for each snowflake.
Scissors
Sticky tape
Stapler

What to do:

1. Lay 3 squares of origami paper one on top of the other, and fold in half diagonally to make a triangle. Repeat with the other 3 squares.

2. Cut parallel slots into the triangle, from the folded edge, following the pattern in the photo. Cut a second set of parallel slots in the other direction. For large paper, you'll need four slots on each side. For smaller paper, you may find that only 3 will fit. Repeat with the other 3 pieces of paper.

3. Open out the paper and separate the pieces.

4. Pick up the two innermost flaps of the first piece of paper and tape them together to form a tube, as in the photo.

5. Turn the paper over, and take the next set of flaps. Tape them together as shown. They'll form a wider tube.

6. Keep turning the paper over and repeating until you've rolled all the flaps into tubes. You've made one point of your snowflake. Set aside and follow this pattern again for all 6 squares of paper.

7. Now take 3 of your snowflake points, and lie them with the tips together as shown. Staple the very tips together at one end.

8. Repeat for the other 3 snowflake points.

9. Now staple the two groups of 3 together at the tips.

10. Put a staple in where the outermost loop of each piece of paper touches its neighbour, around the sides.

11. Hang your snowflake from a thread, and sit down with a hot chocolate to admire it.

Try using scissors which cut a wavy line to cut the slots. You could decorate your snowflake with glitter.

Or make lots of small ones in white, pale blue and silver, and string them up to make a mobile.

Think of other ways you could decorate them.
