Try some German kids' crafts and games! These thowing-chestnuts make a whooshing sound as they fly. Kids love them! They're called Wurfkastanien in German. (Suits age 3 and up with help)
What you need:
Horse chestnuts
String
Crepe paper in two colours
A fine screwdriver (for making holes through the horse chestnuts).
What to do:
Make a hole right through a horse chestnut, near one end.
Poke a short piece of string through the hole (it may help to use a screwdriver for this).
Cut two strips of crepe paper, each 120 cm long and 2cm wide in different colours. Lay these one on top of the other and fold them in half.Tie the string around the crepe paper at the fold, making a firm knot. Have a look at the photo below. You now have four streamers. Trim the ends of the string.
Go outside to throw your horse chestnut. The nut at the end is heavy, and drags the streamers through the air faster than you'd expect, to make the whooshing sound.
If you don't have horse chestnuts, a chunk from the thick end of a carrot would probably work too. Don't use anything harder, as it could be dangerous.
Put a bucket outside, stand well back from it and see if you can lob your throwing chestnuts in. Make up a game.
You could also make holes right through the middle of lots of horse chestnuts and string them together to make necklaces!
