Yes, I know our green wig is insane - but the kids just loved making and wearing it! It's best worn on a hot day so you don't mind too much if a bit of water trickles down your neck.
(Try wearing one of these to a party to break the ice!)
Suits kids age 4 and up.
For One Kid's Wig You'll Need
A baking tray
A roll of paper kitchen towels
Cress seeds
Scissors
Time - it takes a 4-5 days to grow
Now Make Your Crazy Wig
Cut two pieces of paper towel to the length of the baking tray. Place them in it, one on top of the other. (Use continuous lengths, don't tear the towels apart at the perforations.) Make sure that the perforations are at different places on the two layers.
Pour enough water on to thoroughly dampen the paper towels, but don't flood them.
Sprinkle cress seeds all over the top surface of the towels, right up to the edges. Hold the packet 30cm (a foot) above the towels and sprinkle evenly to avoid piling the seeds into clumps. Ideally you want them spread about 5mm (1/4 inch) apart, though a bit of unevenness doesn't matter.
Place the tray in a warm room (but not by a heater), and water it once or twice a day to keep the paper moist.
Once your cress is 2-3cm (1 inch) high, your green wig is ready to wear. Avoid watering it for a few hours before wearing so that the paper dries out a bit. (Not dry enough to wilt - it should be just slightly damp.)
Carefully lift your wig, and put it on your head. The roots of the cress will hold the paper towels together, and the weight of the wig will keep it in place - so long as you don't jump around too much.
Grab your microphone and take to the stage. Of all the crazy wig costumes, this has to be the best!
How about making a green costume to go with your green wig? Or try adding some flowers to the top before you wear it. You could even add paper bees and butterflies!
If you want to go completely over the top, you could try making a whole outfit with cress growing on it! Mad? Yes, but it might win the fancy dress contest!
Encourage your kids to think up more mad ideas. Thinking up crazy ideas helps teach kids to think laterally and to become resourceful.
