Cool craft ideas for winter... The coolest are those that warm you up!

How about making a set of juggling balls? Easy to make with balloons and rice, and you can design your own colour scheme.


Make Juggling Balls from Balloons

(Suitable for kids age 7 and up)



Make juggling balls to keep or as gifts for friends. They're simple to make, but look impressive.

Juggle to keep warm on freezing days!


You'll need:
  • 3 balloons for each juggling ball (in different colours)
  • Rice
  • Plastic supermarket bags
  • Sticky tape
  • Cup
  • Scissors
  • A friend to help you

    What to do:

    1. First make a parcel of rice:Pour ½ cup of rice into the corner of a plastic bag. Twist the bag just above the rice and wrap sticky tape around tightly to seal the parcel. Cut off the extra bag with scissors.

    2. Next, cover it in a layer of balloon:Cut the neck off a balloon, leaving only the rounded part. Stretch this over the bag of rice. It should cover the parcel, apart from a hole at one end.

    3. Add two more layers of balloon:Cut the neck off another balloon and stretch it over the first. Make sure the hole is in a different place for the second layer. Repeat with a third balloon.

    4. Make coloured spots and eyes on your ball:

    Pinch one layer of balloon between your finger and thumb and lift it up away from the ball. Snip off the rubber you've lifted up. This will leave a hole with the colour of the second balloon showing through – a coloured spot.

    Repeat to make more spots and eyes.

    Try lifting and snipping two layers. This will make a spot with a ring of a different colour around it – an eye.

    Make some using your own colour combinations. How about using gold or silver balloons for some of the layers?
