Sit down with your kids and make creative gifts for grandparents or for another family.
(Special thanks to my good friend Tania for the first two ideas.)
Personalised Christmas OrnamentsYour kids can give these to their grandparents each year. Keep some for your own Christmas tree too! To make one ornament, cut two identical star shapes from thin cardboard. Cut a hole the right size to frame your child's photograph in the centre of one of them. Paint the stars gold or silver with acrylic paint or glitter glue, and glue on craft jewels and sequins. Paint the year, eg: 2007, in the centre of the star which has no hole in it. When the stars are dry, glue your child's photo into its star frame. Place the two stars back-to-back, with the decorated sides facing out. Glue them together. Punch a hole in the top and add a loop of silver or gold cord to hang it by.
Your home-made Christmas ornaments will look beautiful on your tree each year, and be treasured as your children grow up.
Christmas Candy Cookie PopsThese are a stunning Christmas gift for a family. Make cookies on sticks, like lollipops, and give them happy faces with candy.
Use any chocolate chip cookie recipe, but leave out the chocolate chips. Place balls of cookie dough on non-stick baking paper on a baking tray. Poke a lollipop stick horizontally into each cookie before baking it. Once the cookies are cool, lift each cookie by its stick, dip it into melted chocolate and then into coloured sprinkles to make the hair. Stick candy on with chocolate to make the eyes and mouth. Wrap your cookies individually in small cellophane bags, one for each member of the family. Tie ribbons around the tops, and attach a gift tag with each person's name on it. Yum!
The Great Christmas Candy ChaseThis easy to make Christmas craft will be a hit! It's also a cool present to give a family. Buy a men's shirt, preferably in bright red or green and in L or XL size, from a second hand shop. Wash and dry it. Glue wrapped lollies and candy on it, using a hot glue gun. Space them about 5cm (2") apart, all over the shirt. Fold it and wrap it up along with these instructions:
